Chapter Eleven - Day by Day
------------------------------------------------

Breakfast was mac and cheese. At least the cow-milk was able to be converted into cheese, thus giving us the ingredients needed. It's not much, but it helps keep the hunger at bay. We were in battle-gear waiting to go top-side and well, at least being armed never was a bad thing when you're dealing with a post-war town like this. Safety was the number one priority.

The smoke that had been thrown into the atmosphere from all the explosions were still circling the atmosphere and bringing beautiful sunsets. With a volcanic eruption, many thousands of metric tons of ash would be thrown into the atmosphere, but the difference is that the nuclear explosions that had caused this smoke had been world-wide...and thuse would take longer to dissipate from the atmosphere. Hence the reason we were still getting brilliant sunrises and sunsets twenty four years after the fact.

The snow covered ground was a brilliant expanse of white so we changed into white clothes to camouflage us better. And well, Matt went off to play with chicks. No...not those kinds of chicks (not if he knew what was good for him), but little fluffy baby chickens.

And of course, Matt and I always made time for each other.

...and whiled away the winter with our own hobbies.

At least it kept us occupied and not thinking about our parents. We both missed them terribly and well, I, sometimes, found Matt with a pensive expression on his face. We had a long road ahead of us and there was no guarantee that that road was going to be easy. There were all sorts of misfortunes that could betide us on our journey...and quite possibly even before we even started on our journey. But for now we could only take it one day at a time. Just knowing that we were together was enough, for now.
