Chapter Six - Decisions
------------------------------------------------

The horizon flushed pink then lightened ever so gradually as the sun peeked over the horizon; and cast its rays over the fog-strewn ground. It appeared as no grass would grow as the sandy ground still lacked a green cover even though it had been twenty years since the cataclysm. Dad had been in his early forties when he had met mom, so he was around 65 when he passed away. It was early, but the war and the recovery process took so much out of him, that I'm still amazed that he lasted that long. And well, Mom didn't want to live without Dad; and I don't blame her. He was her entire world to her.

We still felt rather exposed as the area around us was definitely unfriendly. There wasn't anyone around for miles and it seemed like Nightmare City was abandoned to its fate. Other than the criminals, for whom our foray pretty much told them not to mess with us, considering that we had weapons, it was deserted. The service sims just did their thing and hid as soon as their tasks were done. It was probably the wisest thing for them to do. If we and the gangs came to blows it would be with hot lead and not with words.

As it stands, we have to find a more secure location and we've been eyeing that field. Matt has managed to scrounge up more supplies and fencing and I think that we can cordon off that area as quickly as anyone could think. The big part will be making the underground place where we can retreat to and not have to worry about being exposed in the elements. I noticed a bite in the air and realized that winter was fast closing in on us and that it would behoove us to move on this as soon as possible. We had no window in the room where we slept and we would die of exposure if we ended up living in this house over the winter. Of course we had to make sure that our plants were taken care of too. So I did some gardening while Matt fished.

When one sent up a drone to take a picture, one could see just how exposed we were and even with the fence, we were vulnerable to anyone wanting to get into our home. We needed to find some security.

We fished until nightfall and then roasted our catch that wasn't rainbow trout over the fire. At least it filled our stomachs.

The next morning Matt went out again and fed the chickens and the cows. There's still more of them roaming around so we need to capture and corral them. Hopefully Matt can find some more wood and chicken wire to make the chicken enclosures.

And the days flew by...the same as the next...while we managed our resources and made our plans.

...and we bided our time while we made plans to take over the large empty lot across the way.

...before someone else got the idea to make something there. That would open up some space that we could see where any attack was coming from and if it was all fenced in...they would have some problem getting in. At least we hoped that it would make it a problem for anyone who tried.
